About Tree Preservation Orders

A Tree Preservation Order is a means by which a Local Authority may control the management of trees which are of special value to the community.

Tree Preseravtion Orders do not prevent the management of a tree, nor even its removal, but it enables a Local Authority to gain control of a privately owned tree, in perpetuity.

That there should be some mechanism by which important trees can be saved from heedless destruction, is desirable. There is also a need for Consultants objectively to scrutinise the actions of Local Authorities, and to represent the interests of tree owners.
